Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, our Manager – Building Operations will play a critical role in driving cost-efficient decision-making, contributing to the organization’s overall success.
Key Responsibilities:
As our Manager – Building Operations, you’ll be at the center of the decision making and a key strategic member of our leadership team. Your responsibilities will include:
- Provide oversight and management of heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems for both properties including:
- Ammonia Ice Plant system
- Electrical power generation and distribution systems
- Oil-powered boiler heating system
- Two (2) separate HVAC systems
- Manage maintenance of mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to:
- Two (2) Zambonis
- Two (2) forklifts
- Registered 5886 kw boilers
- Registered three compressor 280 kw refrigeration compressors
- Schedule and manage transition periods for activities, maintenance requirements and logistics for all events.
- Ensure that all systems meet all government requirements and health and safety regulations.
- Ensure that all preventive maintenance and breakdown repairs are completed in a safe and efficient manner.
- Select, consult with, and manage purchases with various service providers.
- Oversee and provide input into the development of the Building Operations budget and capital plan.
- Supervise a diverse complement of staff including full-time and part-time unionized and non-unionized staff from tradespeople to general labourers in the Building Operations Department, including working with Human Resources on such areas as recruitment, labor relations, training, and evaluation.
- Participate in collective bargaining and ongoing labour management processes.
- Develop and recommend planning and development of policies and programs relating to Building Operations.
- Fulfilling all other duties as reasonably required.
Qualifications:
To be part of our senior management team in this role, you’ll need the following:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of seven (7) years progressive management experience including the management of mechanical equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to plan, lead, manage and implement multi-disciplinary projects of various scopes.
- Ability to work collaboratively with organizational leaders and employees to drive performance, productivity and engagement while proactively minimizing conflict and deploying best practices.
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to innovate, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to develop solid and productive working relationships.
- Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations as they relate to this type of facilities work, collective agreements, and related employment legislation.

Carpenter/Maintenance (Temporary)
St. John’s Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (SJSEL) is currently seeking an individual who is energetic, dependable, organized and would enjoy working in a fast paced and exciting environment. The temporary Carpenter/Maintenance position will be for a minimum of six months from November to April and may be extended until the incumbent returns. The successful candidate will be required to do carpentry and maintenance work at Mary Brown’s Centre and St. John’s Convention Centre.
The successful candidate for this position must be a member of CUPE Local 5459 or should be prepared to join the union immediately upon appointment. This position will report to the Manager of Building Operations. The functions of the position will assist with ensuring the successful execution of world-class musical, sports, business, cultural, and family entertainment and conferences taking place at Mary Brown’s Centre and the St. John’s Convention Centre.
Duties of this position will include, but not limited to:
• Performing necessary carpentry work as required at Mary Brown’s Centre and the St. John’s Convention Centre.
• Performing renovations as required.
• Performing regularly scheduled preventative maintenance.
• Prepare estimates for work orders and request materials required to complete jobs.
• Performing necessary building maintenance work as it pertains to Mary Brown’s Centre and St. John’s Convention Centre.
• Operating the ice resurfacing machine along with conducting daily ice maintenance and/or forklift as required
• Being part of an effective work planning process that utilizes work orders and planning
• Loading, unloading and identifying building materials, machinery and tools and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications
• Performing all work assignments safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Regulations that apply to this work and other related legislation, St. John’s Sports & Entertainment Ltd. standards, and quality checks
• Ensuring safety, good housekeeping and quality standards are maintained
• Performing other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate should possess:
Education
• High school diploma or equivalent
Specific Skills/Certifications
• Must be a red seal Carpenter or be prepared to successfully complete an educational upgrade to obtain an Interprovincial Carpenter Red Seal.
• Must have at time of hire and continue to maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s license and a safe driving record.
• Preference will be given to those with experience in the operation of an ice resurfacing machine and a forklift.
• Have a general understanding of plumbing, carpentry, painting, plastering and mechanical repairs of machinery.
• Demonstrated ability, knowledge, and skills necessary to effectively perform maintenance and repairs to various equipment and systems.
• Ability to work independently and to carry out verbal and written instructions accurately and quickly and to deal with people in a tactful, diplomatic manner.
• Participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work (ie. fall protection and forklift training).
Relevant Experience
• A Minimum of 5 years’ experience in the Construction Industry with finished carpentry experience.
Other
• Candidates possessing an equivalent combination of education and experience that is deemed acceptable by St. John’s Sports & Entertainment Ltd. may be considered.
• Certificate of Conduct must be provided
The compensation for the position will be as per the Collective Agreement.
